The Island of LANAI

Lanai, the sixth largest of the Hawaiian Islands, is 48 miles ( 77km) southeast of Oahu.
It has 47 miles ( 76km) of coastline and is 18 miles ( 29 km) across at it’s longest / widest point.
The highest summit is Lana’ihale, 3,370 feet ( 1,027 m ), at the eastern end of the island.

In the olden days, Lanai is said to have been known as the’Isle of contentment’.
This, however, conflicts with the legend that says Lanai was once an evil place, overrun with demons. It was not until the evil spirits were driven out by Kaulula’au, exiled son of a West Maui king, that natives finally came to live on Lanai.
In 1779, Captain Cook took note of the many Hawaiians who lived by fishing and raising taro on the south shore of Lanai. Their numbers soon decreased, however, as a result of wars among the Hawaiian chiefs.
The first missionaries, arriving on the island in 1835, found farmers and fishermen among the principal residents.
