Merimbula is a small seaside town with a population under 5ooo people at the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales (NSW). Merimbula is along the Grand Pacific Drive from Sydney to Melbourne.
It is situated at Lake Merimbula which basically forms a bay directly at the coast. Merimbula is about 6 hours drive from Sydney or Melbourne and a good spot for overnighting and starting to explore the Sapphire Coast, it’s beaches and further driving south will lead you to Eden, one of the best whale watching spots.
The name Merimbula stems from a Aboriginal word meaning “Two lakes”: Lake Merimbula in the south and Lake Back on the north side of town.
Merimbula has a beach, simply called Main Beach, where you also might spot surfers at the northern end of the 6km long beach.
Being a small town it is normal that you can experience local normal life and a relaxed atmosphere. Definitely try a walk or run along Merimbula Boardwalk which is a tranquil easy walk way along the lake’s shoreline.
