The small City of Golden is located ca. 15-20 mi west of Denver and approx. 20 mi south of Boulder. Sometimes it is called the ‘2 hour vacation town’… because some people do not need longer to discover the town.

The Visitor Center can be found at the corner Washington Ave and 10th St. Golden Visitor Center hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm; Saturdays, 10:00am – 4:00pm.

The major attractions of Golden can all be found in the downtown area around Washington Ave. and you can easily walk the city. The Astor House & Museum, the Armory Building (Cobblestone House), the Coors Brewery.

Apropos Coors Brewery: the little shuttle bus that transports tour visitors from the parking lot to the brewery drives through downtown and the friendly drivers give you a sightseeing tour and explain the buildings and talk about some history.

Golden is also home to the well renowned Engineers School “Colorado School of Mines”. Address: 1500 Illinois St., Golden. See our weblink further below.

Colorado Railroad Museum

If you are interested in railroad history then this museum is a must-see.
The Colorado Railroad Museum is said to be one of the best privately supported rail museums in the United States. It displays ca. 100 historic narrow and standard gauge locomotives and cars on 15 acres at the foot of North Table Mountain, near Golden, Colorado. Address: 17155 West 44th Avenue

Armory Building

Built in 1913 with 3,300 Wagon loads of cobblestones from the Clear Creek as well as Quartz from the Golden Gate Canyon. Corner 13th and Arapahoe St.

Astor House Museum Hotel Museum

The former hotel opened in 1867 and was one of the top hotels west of the Mississippi. Today it is a museum and visitors can see one of the first modern kitchens built around 1890. Address: 822 12th Street

Buffalo Herd – 30 minutes away from Denver

The City of Denver maintains two herds of Buffalos that was once started by bringing a few buffalos from Yellowstone National Park to Genesee Mountain Park which is located just 30 minutes west of Denver.
Genesee, a Native American expression meaning “the shining valley“, is one place where you can see the buffalos roaming freely in the park. Take exit 254 on I-70 (Genesee Park Exit) or take exit 253 (Chief Hosa Exit) and follow the signs. The park is approximately 30 minutes (20 miles) away from Denver.

The other herd is located off Interstate 25 in Daniels Park. Take exit 188 (Castle Pines Parkway) and drive west to the Junction Daniels Park Rd where you turn north.

Coors with its Brewery Tour is may be the major attraction in Golden – at least it seems that way if you are looking at the packed parking lot where the Coors Shuttle Bus pick up the visitors for the free tour.
Tours are available 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The brewery is located in downtown, and you must drive your car to the parking lot at Ford St / corner 13th St. There’s a little shuttle bus station and the tour bus stops every 10-15 minutes.

The tour takes approx. 45 minutes, and you may sample some of the beers. You need a picture id to proof you are 21 or older.
