In 1864 King Ludwig II – at age 18 – came to power as the new King of Bavaria. He was born on August 15th, 1845, at Nymphenburg Palace, Munich.
He was king until 1886 — he died on June 13th, 1886, at Lake Starnberg (south of Munich).

Your next stop should be Oberammergau, famous for its Passion Play, where you can browse the woodcarvers‘ workshops. Don‘t miss the chance to pop in to the nearby imposing Ettal Abbey and abbey church with its domed roof adorned with depictions of numerous saints. In the abbey brewery you can sample some Ettal beer and the abbey liqueur distilled by the Benedictine monks, which is said to be good for your health.
Ludwig II had his favourite residence, Linderhof Palace, built in the French rococo style as an homage to his French namesake, the Sun King Louis XIV. The route continues along the shores of the secluded Lake Plansee back to Füssen, where you can round off your sightseeing tour in style with romantic views of the old quarter and Hohes Schloss Castle.
