‘The Palmetto State’
South Carolina offers many opportunities for a visitor to spend his time and enjoy the beauty of the state. On one hand there are the white and not overcrowded sand beaches and on the other hand unspoiled nature with forests, meadows and wilderness. Of course, a major and perhaps the most popular outdoor activity next to the beaches is golf sport. South Caroline has some of the best spots in the country.
South Carolina in a nutshell
The Indians named todays South Carolina the ‘land of the hundred islands’.
Off the coast lie around 1.500 islets – on many of them the visitor can still today see large and impressive country homes which were built by well-situated landowners during the colonial time
South Carolina offers numerous possibilities with regard to leisure activities. On one hand the white sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast and on the other hand unspoiled forest landscapes and beautiful countryside.
The Whitewater Falls, two waterfalls, lure nature lover as well as a rafting or canoe trip on the Edisto River.
The non-outdoor adventurer probably enjoys more South Carolina’s reputation for having several of the best golf courses in the nation. On Hilton Head Island several of the major golf events take place.
The probably most famous beach resort is Myrtle Beach with white sandy beaches and many attractions like theme parks for the whole family.
In winter you have to book early, otherwise expect not to find a room.
The city of Charleston which evolved from the first English settlements in 1670, is today one of the nations oldest cities and has perhaps the most impressive historic district of any other town in the country.
Many of the original historic building were destroyed during the civil war and the state as a whole suffered heavily from the war but most of the original structures were restored by Charleston’s people in loving way.
