A working estate that would sustain itself and benefit the community. America’s largest home.

Acres of gardens, parklands, and managed forests. A country retreat for friends and family. This was George Vanderbilt’s vision for Biltmore Estate more than 100 years ago, and it lives to this day.

America’s largest privately owned home, the Biltmore House, is nestled among 8,000 acres in the mountains near Asheville. George Vanderbilt, son of industrialist and philanthropist Cornelius Vanderbilt, saw his 250-room French-Renaissance chateau completed in 1895.

Biltmore House received its first guests in 1895 on Christmas Eve. After six years of construction, this remarkable house with its four acres of floor space had finally been completed. The facts and figures of the estate have amazed guests ever since.

From Olmsted’s “genial” Shrub Garden to the formal beauty of his Italian Garden… from the fragrant collection of 2,300 roses to the blazing color of more than 1,000 azaleas… The gardens are simply extraordinary

This National Historic Landmark is among the country’s most visited historic residences with shops, a four-star hotel, lush gardens, serene walking trails and an award-winning winery.
