Location: On the Island of Rügen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North-eastern Germany. Closest large City: Rostock.

As well its two lighthouses, Cape Arkona – the northernmost point of the old East Germany – is home to a pair of military bunkers. The Arkona bunker dates back to the days of the Wehrmacht and accommodated the Sixth Coastal Brigade during the Cold War. It has now been converted into an art gallery.

The other, larger bunker was used by the People’s Navy and the United Baltic Fleet as a command post. It was decommissioned on 3 October 1990.

Guided tours give visitors a chance to see the exhibition charting the history of the People’s Navy and its Sixth Flotilla (based on the Bug peninsula), original furnishings from the time and a photo retrospective.
