Stuttgart delights visitors with its own special charm and invites them to take a stroll through the many traditional Stuttgart markets or its magnificent Market Hall.
There is a traditional market each week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays on the Marketplace and Schiller Square from 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. Here you can buy fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables from the region, as well as flowers and all kinds of homemade produce such as jams, honey, pickles and lots more besides.
People in Swabia also set great store by healthy and organically grown food.
In the "Bauernmarkthalle"(market hall for farm produce) in the west of the city, farmers from all over Baden-Württemberg sell their
high-quality, organic wares in this former tram depot.
Juicy strawberries and luscious asparagus can be haggled over one Saturday in the merry month of May from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stuttgart`s Asparagus Market around the Town Hall and Schiller Square.
Also popular is the traditional Stuttgart Wine Market in May, where local wine growers from the Stuttgart region proudly present their finest wines. Collectors are sure to find a bargain at the Stuttgart Flea Market. It is held on the Karlsplatz (Karl Square) every Saturday. Stallholders sell kitsch, antiques and curios here from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m..
Twice a year there are also Stuttgart`s larger spring and autumn flea markets, where you can pick up bargains, gifts and antiques at the Marketplace, Schillerplatz and Karlsplatz as well as in the Hirsch-, Kirch- and Dorotheenstrasse.
Reputed to be one of Germany`s finest market halls, Stuttgart Market Hall was built in Jugendstil design in 1914. This impressive listed building is a veritable paradise, full of epicurean delights and stylish and attractive household furnishings and garden equipment.
On the ground floor, shopkeepers present their artistically and appetizingly displayed produce at a total of 38 stalls. The great variety of goods is guaranteed by the many different nationalities of the stallholders: 4 are from Italy, 4 from Greece, 2 from Hungary, 1 from Asia, 1 from Iran, 1 from Turkey, 1 from France and 22 from Germany. Apart from the international nature of the produce available, the popularity of Stuttgart`s Market Hall is due in particular to the freshness of the food on sale here. Its successful combination of specialities from the four corners of the earth, high-class articles for an elegant ambience in the kitchen, house and garden, and tempting catering makes shopping in this historic architecture a special occasion.
The range of food on offer in Stuttgart`s Market Hall was augmented in 1993 by Merz & Benzing`s "Special Emporium". Originally only on the ground floor and in the basement, they expanded their sales area in 1997 to include the first floor, making a total of over 3000 sq.m. Their displays of goods for different homes and lifestyles represent a tempting voyage of discovery through interiors with style and charm. In addition you can buy tea and High-Grown coffee from the store`s own roasters or visit the Kertu-Strassburger hairdressing salon.
Three restaurants provide high-quality food and drink in the Market Hall: the "Desiree" Tapas Bar with Spanish delicacies on the ground floor, the Market Hall restaurant with Swabian specialities, and the "Empore" restaurant on the gallery with tempting Italian cuisine.
