With the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, Stuttgart State Orchestra, Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Stuttgart Philharmonic
(to name but a few of its ensembles), the musical city of Stuttgart guarantees a fascinating sound experience not only in its own concert halls.
Its famous orchestras are well known and highly esteemed all over the world as the state capital´s musical ambassadors.
The SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart has many exemplary interpretations of classical and romantic works in its repertoire,
but it also champions contemporary music and rarely-performed works.
Prominent musical personages - in particular Sergiu Celibidache - have furthered the international reputation of the RSO Stuttgart.
Sir Roger Norrington has been its principal conductor since 1998.
By combining historical performance practice with the resources of a modern orchestra he has succeeded in giving the orchestra its own,
very distinctive "Stuttgart Sound".
The Wuerttemberg State Orchestra Stuttgart´s 400-year history makes
it one of the oldest ensembles in Germany, and one which is steeped in
tradition. It owes its reputation to the many famous international conductors
involved with the orchestra over the years. However, it is no less renowned for
its exceptional performances of contemporary works.
Since the beginning of the 2007/2008 season,
the orchestra has been under the baton of Manfred Honeck.
For over 60 years now the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra has been high on the list of first-class orchestras of international repute. Since September 2006 its principal conductor, Michael Hofstetter, has directed the ensemble on world tours and concerts in Stuttgart and in Europe. The orchestra had already made an excellent name for itself under its previous conductor, Dennis Russell Davies, as well as under its founder and long-term director, Karl Muenchinger.
Founded in 1924, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the orchestra of Baden-Wuerttemberg`s state capital, gives regular performances at home and abroad. On top of its varied obligations in several concert series in Stuttgart, the orchestra also performs frequently in other cities in southwest Germany and gives guest appearances in Germany and elsewhere. Since September 2004 Gabriel Feltz has been its principal conductor and the state capital´s General Director of Music.
