Staatstheater Stuttgart: Opera, Ballet and Theatre

One of the cultural showpieces of Baden-Wuerttemberg`s state capital of Stuttgart is the Staatstheater Stuttgart - Stuttgart State Theatres - Europe´s largest triple-branch theatre. In opera, ballet and theatre this traditional cultural center, always willing to break new ground, sets new standards each season with top-calibre performances which time and again enthral and impress both international audiences and opera and theatre critics.

The history of the Staatsoper Stuttgart goes back into the 17th century. With its director Albrecht Puhlmann and its musical director Manfred Honeck, the opera achieved the top of the world-wide leading opera-houses. With this they transmit important impulses for the present theatre-scene. Already for the sixth time (1994, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2006) the Stuttgart State Opera Company received the coveted critics´ award "Opera House of the Year 2006" for its outstanding overall performance. Another award went for the seventh time to the Stuttgart State Opera Chorus, one of Germany´s oldest opera choruses, for the exceptionally high standard of its singing and performing. They were awarded with the prize of the "Opera Chorus of the year".

The internationally renowned Stuttgart State Opera and the world-famous Stuttgart Ballet appear on the stage of the imposing Opera House (seating 1400), which is located in the middle of the extensive Palace Gardens and was once said by the producer Max Reinhardt to be the most beautiful opera house in the world.

The Stuttgart Ballet looks back on a long history rich in tradition in Stuttgart. It originated as far back as the year 1609 at the royal court of Wuerttemberg. In the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries great choreographers made Stuttgart one of Europe`s most highly esteemed centres of dance. In 1961 John Cranko took over as the company´s director and choreographer and in the following twelve years not only w rote one of the most successful chapters in Stuttgart´s ballet history but also rose to a unique position himself in the ranks of the most significant choreographer personalities in the world.

For over 40 years now the Stuttgart Ballet has been one of the world´s leading ensembles. Following Marcia Haydée, Reid Anderson has been the director of the Stuttgart company since the 1996/1997 season and has ensured that the Stuttgart Ballet continues to be one of the world`s best. The Stuttgart Ballets unique artistic profile comprises not only John Cranko´s narrative ballets but also exciting works and first performances by famous choreographers.

The "Stuttgarter Schauspiel" theatre company at the "Schauspielhaus" theatre under the management of its director Hasko Weber is one of the most interesting and innovative ensembles in German-speaking theatre circles and its exciting performances are often a public talking-point. With a repertoire of over 60 works the theatre company is characterised by a wide spectrum of expressional and language forms - from ancient times through to the 21st century, from children´s plays to comedies and the classics. Owing to its first-class, sensational performances, the Stuttgart ensemble was awarded the title of "Theatre of the year 2006" in a critics´ opinion poll carried out by the stage magazine "Theater Heute".
