Stuttgart´s numerous museums, a wide range of galleries and a very lively art scene guarantee outstanding enjoyment for art lovers. One of Germany`s most prominent museums is the Stuttgart State Gallery (Staatsgalerie).
Its three buildings represent different definitions of the function of museum architecture: the Old State Gallery in the style of Late Classicism, Stirling´s Postmodernist construction and the elegant Steib building. Each of them speaks its own individual, self-assured architectural language, and yet their interiors unite to form a spatial continuum which does justice to the museum´s art treasures. On exhibition in the New State Gallery are works of art from the Middle Ages up to the 18th century and paintings and sculptures from Classicism to Impressionism, as well as Old German, Italian and Netherlandish paintings.
19th and 20th century art can be seen at the Old State Gallery. Here, the emphasis is on Classical Modernism and postwar art. The extension designed by Wilfried and Katharina Steib houses the Graphics collection consisting of over 400 000 works.
Since 2005 the Stuttgart Museum of Art (Kunstmuseum) , located right in the heart of the city on Palace Square, has enhanced the diversity of art and culture on offer in the state capital of Stuttgart in a unique form. The spectacular glass cube enthrals by virtue of its elegant simplicity, particularly at night, when the glass facade begins to shine with a luminous radiance and reveals the stone core of the structure´s interior.
Visible from afar, this glass cube attracts a broad spectrum of art lovers with three or four major exhibitions a year, often of works by contemporary artists. The full extent of the museum, however, only becomes apparent on entering the actual collection: by incorporating a disused system of tunnels, the subtle and sophisticated design of the architects Hascher and Jehle made it possible to enlarge the exhibition area to a total of 5000 sq.m. Here, in constantly changing exhibitions, the museum presents the most outstanding works of the municipal art collection, which originated in 1924 with a donation by Count Silvio della Valle di Casanova and now comprises over 15 000 works of Classical Modernism and contemporary art. Stuttgart´s art collection is famous for the world´s most important collection of works by Otto Dix.
Key works by artists such as Adolf Hoelzel, Willi Baumeister, Fritz Winter and Dieter Roth make a visit to Stuttgart´s Museum of Art a truly memorable experience.
