Shopping in Nuremberg

Shopping in Nuremberg's inner city is a very relaxed pleasure. A generously designed pedestrian precinct, established as early as in 1966 – the oldest of its kind in Germany – is also one of Europe's largest shopping precincts. Within comfortable walking distance many department stores and shops offers something for everybody: for lovers of fine fashions, for bargain hunters and trend setters. In the historic ambience of the Old Town, any shopping spree in exclusive boutiques, glass-fronted shopping malls and department stores can easily be combined with sightseeing.

Not far from the Church of St. Lawrence, you'll find the heart of the shopping city, the parallel streets of Breite Gasse and Karolinenstraße. This is shopping fun for the entire family: there is something to cater for every taste and for every budget. Adjacent Kaiserstraße offers exclusive products for the demanding customer. Elegant boutiques sell well-known designer brands and bring the flair of the metropolis to Franconia.

A stroll through Kaiserstraße will take you to the main market square, Nuremberg's "best room". The daily farmers' market located there is a joy for all senses. Market stalls with their red-and-white sunshades offer a feast for the palate: fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and sausage from the region, cheese and baker's goods. And the colourful flower stalls are an additional feast for the eye.

In the numerous little lanes around the main market square and below the Castle, there are many little shops to discover. They sell designer fashion, jewellery, shoes, or antiques. If you look for something a little unusual you are sure to find something here.

The "Handwerkerhof" (Crafts Yard) is an attractive special feature of the shopping city of Nuremberg. Traditional craftsmen such as pewterers, glass engravers, glass painters, doll makers and leather bag makers offer their wares in a typically Franconian half-timbered ambience.

Nuremberg is a varied and attractive shopping city beyond the city walls, with excellent public transport connections. Large shopping centres in the southern and northern city districts are ideal shopping destinations for the people living in Nuremberg's surroundings, too.
