Traditional and famous 'Wirtshäuser' (Beer and decent food) & Beer Halls

Some Traditional 'Wirtshäuser' [places where you sit in a traditional atmosphere, get decent and typical dishes and of course beer]

Beer Halls (Wirtshäuser) of the major breweries of Munich can be found all over the place in downtown. Check out Theatinerstrasse, Kaufinger Strasse between Marienplatz and Stachus (Karlsplatz). You'll find plenty of Wirtshäuser with outdoor seating in summer. During the colder seasons just 'dive' into the halls and cellars...

These restaurants (we mentioned already: they're called 'Wirtshaus') are visited by locals as well as tourists. Don't expect that one speaks English here, well it might be happening from time to time but is not the normal case.
Usually a rustic atmosphere, rich food and great beers.
One of the most traditional dishes is a pork roast, which is called 'Schweinsbraten'. It's served with a potato dumpling, called a 'Knödl'.

  • Augustiner Bräu, Neuhauser Straße 27, Tel. 231 83-257 (this is a very authentic place, directly in downtown)
  • Haxnbauer, Sparkassenstr./Am Platzl, Tel. 29 16 21 00 (This place has probably the best pork knuckles)
  • Spatenhaus, An der Oper, Residenzstraße 12, Tel. 29 07 06-0
  • Zum Dürnbräu, Dürnbräugasse 2, Tel. 22 21 95 (lots of locals, kind of difficult to discover, because it's located at a very tiny alley)
  • Zum Spöckmeier, Rosenstr. 9, Tel. 26 80 88 (great reputation)
  • Hofbräuhaus, Platzl 9, Tel. 2901360 (The most famous beer hall, lots of tourists, but gorgeous)
  • Weisses Brauhaus, Tal 7, Tel. 2901380 (Expensive but great Weizen-Beer)
  • Andechser am Dom, Weinstr. 7a, Tel. 298481 (Andechs Beer (dark) is one of the Finest! Good food is found here as well)
  • Franziskaner Fuchsenstuben, Residenzstr.9 und Perusastr.5, Tel. 2318120 (Always a very good choice; Franziskaner brewery has one of the best Weizen Beers in Germany)
  • Donisl, Weinstr.1, Tel. 296264
  • Hackerhaus, Sendlinger Straße14, Tel. 2605026
  • Ratskeller, Marienplatz 8, Tel. 21 99 890 (not too rustic)

Six large breweries for Munich
Whereas at the beginning of the 20th century there were still 25 breweries, today six large breweries are responsible for keeping up Munich's reputation as the beer metropolis: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräuhaus, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten-Franziskaner.
These six world-renowned brands together brew some 5.8 million hectolitres of beer each year.
