Kaltenberg Castle and König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei (Brewery)

Kaltenberg, Bavaria, is located ca. 30 mi (50 km) west of Munich and about 20 mi (32 km) south of Augsburg.

Kaltenberg is famous for several things: Kaltenberg Castle and the 'Royal Highness' beer coming from the local royal brewery and also for the Kaltenberg Knights Tournament which is taking place in July each year. The Kaltenberg Knights Tournament is the largest tournament of its kind in modern times.

Royal Highness Luitpold Prinz von Bayern oversees the quality management of the brewing process for all beers of the König Ludwig Schloßbrauerei Kaltenberg (Brewery).

VIsitors can enjow two restaurants: 'Schloss Restaurant Kaltenberg' is situated withini the castle and offers a sophisticated cuisine with a french touch. The 'Ritterschwemme' is a rustic restaurant / bar situated on the castle premises, right next to the castle entrance.

Kaltenberg, the township was first mentioned in church books in 1179. The name can be translated as 'celtic hill' but the reason for that name is not clear. In 1292 the castle was built but destroyed in 1320. Aristocrats from Augburg rebuilt it as a palace in 1420. During the mid of the century it is said that a 'tavern' was first mentioned as part of the palace and it is assumed that the brewing process started around that time.
