Andechs Abbey is perched atop „Holy Mountain“ overlooking the eastern shore of Lake Ammersee in Bavaria. (It is located southwest of Munich.) It can look back on centuries of Benedictine tradition and has been a popular destination for pilgrims for more than 500 years.

Today, cultural tourists from all over the world make their own pilgrimage to the site. They come to enjoy mouthwatering cuisine and excellent beer at the brewery and its restaurant, the on-site butcher and the Klostergasthof tavern.

In addition, the splendid royal apartments and the „Florian Stadl“ hall (home of the annual Carl Orff Festival) are popular venues for meetings and conferences.

The monks and their staff have even come up with a corporate-style mission statement that sums up the abbey‘s commercial approach: „Our tradition is based on progress; we owe our progress to our tradition“.

Andechs Brewery & Restaurant

Andechs brewery restaurant „Bräustüberl“, the brewery restaurant at Andechs Abbey, offers a Benedictine charm that‘s really stood the test of time. „Let all guests who arrive be received like Christ“ prescribed the Rule of Saint Benedict, and his monks duly fed the arriving pilgrims. Andechs beer is still made in the abbey brewery and is known far and wide for its easy-to-drink character. When the weather is fine, the Bräustüberl terrace offers spectacular panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps and the surrounding countryside.

Klostergasthof Tavern

Even older than the abbey itself is the Klostergasthof tavern that was renovated in 1992. It first appeared in records in 1438, described as a ducal hostelry. In the middle of 15th century, Duke Albrecht III donated this „most worthy of inns“ to the newly founded Benedictine abbey at Andechs.

The old Germanic names of the dining areas reflect how long they have been in existence and there is even a theatre. Three new rooms were added as part of the refurbishment.
