Hafen(Port)City Hamburg - city for the 21st century

Hamburg is re-inventing itself – and grasping a unique opportunity to grow downtown by around 40 percent.

HafenCity Hamburg, the largest urban development project in Europe, is being built on 155 hectares formerly used for the port. Lying directly on the Elbe and the port, a new district of the city is being created to provide a unique mix of culture and leisure, living and working downtown, shopping and eating out, its parks and public places, promenades and perspective views all right on the water.

The first sections of the new quarter are already completed and occupied. More are now under construction or at an advanced stage of planning. Even a special U-Bahn line is planned, making the city centre just a few minutes away. By 2020, 40,000 people will be working and around 12,000 living here. This new area of the city and the cultural institutions planned will also be attracting around 3 million visitors a year.

Hamburg’s new icon, the Elbe Philharmonic Hall, is already being built on Kaispeicher A. The International Maritime Museum Hamburg, HafenCity University and the Science-Center with its Aquarium and ScienceTheater in Überseequartier will be further attractions. Hamburgians have already begun to fl ock to Magellan Terraces on Sandtorhafen and the Hamburg Cruise Center as popular meeting places
