Farm Stays in Germany

A rural idyll and culinary traditions in Lower Saxony

The ‛Elbe Weser North Sea‘ regional culinary network – part of the European ‛Culinary Heritage‘ network – takes lovers of local cuisine on a culinary journey through the region. The blue plaque featuring a white chef‘s hat is displayed by 15 businesses around the ‛Altes Land am Elbstrom‘ holiday region. The businesses have to meet strict criteria with regard to how food is produced, sourced and sold. Providing a typical regional ambience is just as important. Members include producers and farm shops as well as restaurants and cafés.

Heathland lamb, eel from Lake Steinhude or game from the Deister hills: typical specialities from the Hannover tourism region. The new brochure entitled ‛Regionale Küche genießen‘ (Enjoying Regional Cuisine) published by the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) and Tourismus Region Hannover e. V. (TRH) presents a number of cosy restaurants and quaint inns in the area. More than 50 restaurants and cafés from the Hannover tourism region specialise in serving fresh food that has been locally sourced and their chefs attach great importance to the use of regional produce

Many farms and country estates in the regions of Lower Saxony are now focusing on low-impact tourism. They offer unspoilt countryside, a chance to experience life in the country and friendly, traditional service at attractive prices. More than 400 farms offering holidays have come together to form the Association for Holidays in the Countryside. Services range from last-minute offers to recipe ideas from the farm kitchen – all clearly laid out under various categories on the association‘s website.

Bavaria

There are more than 1,000 Bavarian farms offering holidays with plenty of activities and recreation all year round. Even in the colder season, visitors can still enjoy legendary Bavarian hospitality, varied scenery, friendly locals, autumn customs and winter sports for all the family. The farms make ideal bases for walks through the colourful autumnal forests or cross-country skiing tours through the snow-covered landscape. Children have lots of space to run around in and there‘s plenty to do even when it‘s raining or snowing: they can play in the hay or spend time with the animals. Some farms offer torch-lit walks to traditional alpine huts where a warming drink is served. Romantics can take a carriage ride or enjoy the winter wonderland on a horse-drawn sleigh. The Farm Holidays Association for Bavaria makes it easier to play your visit with its online search function at www.bauernhof-urlaub.com. Visitors can search for accommodation in the countryside by star rating, region and location. They can also search specifically for required facilities or leisure activities. The website also features all-inclusive packages offered by farms – e.g. ‛Autumn Milk Weeks in the Allgäu‘, ‛Pumpkin and Chestnut Season‘ or ‛Snowball Weeks‘ at Upper Bavarian farms.
